Why Gen X Shopper Gamers Deserve More Attention From Brands
For years, marketers have viewed mobile gaming primarily as a channel for awareness. But consumer behaviour is changing, and so is the role gaming plays in the purchase journey.
Today's mobile gamers aren't simply passing time, they're discovering products, evaluating brands, and making purchase decisions while they play.
Our latest report suggests this shift is happening because mobile gaming combines three conditions that are increasingly difficult to find elsewhere: consistent attention, positive emotions, and habitual engagement.
The data speaks for itself. 77% of shopper gamers primarily play on smartphones or tablets, and 73% spend at least four hours gaming every week, making mobile gaming one of the most frequent digital touchpoints in their daily lives.
Equally important is how they play. Mobile gaming isn't dominated by competition or high-pressure experiences. Instead, 63% of players say they feel relaxed while gaming, creating a mindset where brand messages feel less intrusive and more naturally integrated into the experience.
This emotional context has a measurable impact on consumer behaviour. 79% have engaged with or shown interest in an in-game advertisement, while 44% have gone on to purchase or download a product after seeing one.
What's particularly interesting is that these purchases aren't limited to gaming. Consumers report buying products across categories including food & beverages (34%), technology & electronics (33%), fashion (29%), and home goods (22%), reinforcing the idea that mobile gaming has become a meaningful discovery and conversion channel for everyday brands.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway for marketers is that effectiveness isn't driven by interruption, it's driven by relevance. Players are most likely to respond when advertising aligns with their needs, offers value through rewards, or comes from brands they already trust.
As consumer attention becomes increasingly fragmented, brands need environments where audiences are engaged, receptive, and ready to act. Mobile gaming is proving to be one of those environments.
