Gameloft
From player to creator - Build your first 3D Game
October 10, 2025

Ever played a game and thought: “I could make this even better?” Or maybe you've just been fascinated by the magic that happens behind the screen, the code that brings entire worlds to life. If you're ready to stop just playing games and start building them, we've got something special for you.

This isn't your average university course. This is a hands-on, deep-dive workshop where you'll build a 3D game engine from scratch. That’s right, no pre-made engines here. You'll learn the fundamental principles by creating your own tools and then use them to build your very own game.

Get ready for a practical and fun journey into:
•    3D Engine
•    Advanced Debugging
•    Design Patterns
•    Memory management
•    Shaders
•    Cool Effects
•    Rendering Techniques
•    ... and so much more

What will you learn in the workshop sessions?

This workshop is all about practical skills. We'll start with a blank screen and end with a game you can call your own.

You’ll learn how to build your engine piece by piece, adding features like textured 3D models, a moveable camera and dynamic object trajectories. We'll dive into creating realistic environments with terrain, a skybox, fog and reflections. Then, we’ll bring it all to life with the Phong lighting model, normal mapping and even animated fire effects. You'll also tackle essentials like collision detection, sound integration, and post-processing effects like grayscale, blur, and bloom.

Beyond the core graphics, we'll cover crucial secondary skills: mastering Visual Studio, using debugging tools like a pro, understanding design patterns (like Singleton and Factory), managing memory efficiently, and handling data with XML files.

The tech stack is lean and powerful: we'll be using C++ and GLSL (the shading language) with the OpenGL ES 2.0 library.

Who's guiding you on this journey?

This workshop gives you the unique opportunity to learn from an industry professional with real-world game development experience. Let's talk about the selection test

To make sure everyone starts with a solid foundation, there’s a selection test.
•    When: November 1st, at 8:00 AM (duration: 2 hours).
•    Where: Room EG 204.
•    What to expect: The test covers C++ (mostly C++98 with a dash of C++11) and the Standard Template Library (STL). It has two parts: a written section with short questions and a practical exercise where you'll write a small program on a computer.

Don't let the test scare you off. Even if you feel you're a beginner, we encourage you to apply. Once you sign up, we'll send you an email packed with useful links, tutorials and sample questions to help you prepare. This isn't about getting a perfect score, it's about showing you're ready to learn. We'll select the top 11 candidates to join the workshop.

Plus, you can bring books or use the internet for reference during the test (just no communication tools or online compilers). It’s an open-book challenge designed to see how you solve problems.

The results will be announced by November 6th and if you're selected, you'll need to confirm your spot by November 7th.

What to expect each week:

Our Saturdays will be interactive and productive. Here’s the typical flow:

1.Kick-off (8:00 AM): We'll start by tackling any bugs or questions from the previous week's homework.
2.Quick recap: A short, informal quiz to make sure the key concepts from the last lesson have stuck.
3.New lesson: A 30–60-minute presentation introducing the day's new topic.
4.Hands-on coding: You'll immediately apply what you've learned through practical tasks. Anything you don't finish becomes homework, which usually takes between 0-4 hours a week.

This workshop is a serious commitment, but the payoff is huge. You'll finish the semester not just with more knowledge, but with a project that proves your skills.

This is your chance to go beyond the classroom and build something real. Are you in?

Don't wait! Send your CV and cover letter to learningcenter-romania@gameloft.com by October 31st.
