What does “Reborn and Remastered” mean for Legacy?
Victor: N.O.V.A. Legacy is “Reborn” because we have returned to the first N.O.V.A. and revived it. This was because the original game is no longer playable on stores, and we thought that this was a shame.
Legacy was a response to this, we wanted to pay homage to the original and modernize it for a new audience. And this is where Remastered comes in. We took the 2009 N.O.V.A. Near-Orbit Vanguard Alliance, and set about reworking and renewing every bit of it to make it shine. From the graphics and mechanics to the level design.
How did the previous N.O.V.A. games influence you?
Victor: Before starting on Legacy, the full design team played all of the games in the N.O.V.A. series. We all took notes, screenshots, and then compiled all of that information into a single “wiki” document so we didn't miss a beat during the development process.
The idea was to be true to the original N.O.V.A. while also retconning a few elements to take into account features and events that the 2nd and 3rd chapters added. And I think we achieved that with Legacy!
What was kept and updated in this remake?
Victor: We wanted to keep the essence of the game, remaining as close as possible to the original story and characters. Another focus was updating the graphics and audio to be on par with today's videogame standards.
Cell Phones have evolved a lot in the last 8 years, they're very powerful now and this enabled us to make huge overhauls. We took the original linear story-based mission structure and made it mobile-friendly. Now, missions are shorter so you can play in bursts on the go.
Then we added a deeper RPG-style layer where you can craft and upgrade your weapons, or select useful items like special armor and grenades to take on missions.
To top it off we improved a lot of the multiplayer aspect, using the fantastic "Modern Combat 5" for reference. I really hope the players like it!
What is your team like at Gameloft Madrid?
Victor: I feel very lucky because the whole team is extremely talented, hard-working, and friendly. Every day I work here I learn something even though I have been making games for quite some time. I really love that.
I think together we've accomplished a daunting task, making a fun game with a huge variety of content that fits in 20MB. Just 20MB! It's truly an achievement :)
